The American Quarter Horse Association is based in Amarillo, Texas.  AQHA-approved shows are comprised of a variety of competition classes, one of those is the Halter class. 
 
The Halter classes is designed judge the horse on their physical appearance or confirmation, classes are separated by age and sex.  Horses are judged on balance, movement at the walk and the trot, characteristics as they relate to the breed and sex of the horse, structural correctness, and the amount of muscling.  Balance is most important.
 
Horses are usually shown in a flat leather halter trimmed in silver.  Halter horses have small heads, refined muzzles, wide jowls, with a larger amount of muscling when compared to other Quarter Horses.
